What is number porting?

Number porting is the process of transferring your phone numbers from your current carrier (e.g., Ring Central, Google Voice, AT&T, Dialpad, or Kixie) to Aloware. Once completed, your calls and texts will route entirely through Aloware's system. This process applies to US and Canada 10DLC and toll-free numbers only (TFN).

If your numbers are hosted on Twilio, refer to the Snap Port Guide for faster instructions specific to Twilio accounts.

Step 1: Begin your porting request

To start the process, contact Aloware Support or your dedicated Customer Success Manager (CSM). Use Aloware's messenger tool or email to raise the request. When doing so, provide an initial list of the phone numbers you want to port. This allows Aloware to evaluate the type of numbers and confirm the appropriate next steps.

Step 2: Gather required documents

Once your porting request has been initiated, you'll need to collect the necessary documents from your current provider to proceed.

  1. Request a Customer Service Record (CSR) from your provider. This document contains essential details like the service address associated with your numbers and the porting PIN required to authorize the transfer. If you’re porting toll-free numbers, these numbers typically don’t require a PIN.

  2. Complete the Letter of Authorization (LOA) provided by Aloware. Ensure the service address entered matches the address listed on the CSR exactly.

  3. Provide proof of ownership by sharing an invoice or account screenshot from your current provider. This document should show the phone numbers being ported as well as your name or company name.

If you’re porting multiple numbers, prepare and attach a CSV or Excel file listing all the numbers. For clarity, use separate LOAs for 10DLC numbers and TFNs.

Step 3: Submit the required documents

After gathering the necessary items, submit the following to Aloware Support for review:

  • The CSR from your current carrier

  • A completed and signed LOA

  • Proof of Ownership (e.g., invoice or account screenshot)

  • The Porting PIN, if applicable

  • A list of the numbers you’re porting (in CSV or Excel format for multiple numbers)

Aloware Support will verify your submission for accuracy and completeness before sending the porting request to the receiving carrier. You’ll be kept informed throughout the process.

Step 4: Confirm the porting timeline

Once all documents are submitted, Aloware will confirm the estimated timeline for completing the porting process. It typically takes 2–4 weeks for non-Twilio numbers to be fully transferred.

Coordinate with Aloware to schedule a port start date that allows at least two weeks of preparation before you’re ready to leave your current system. Keep in mind that once your numbers port, calls and texts will stop functioning with your old carrier and will be fully functional on Aloware.

If SMS messaging is critical to your business, plan for potential delays caused by A2P 10DLC registration. The Aloware team will assist you during the registration process to minimize downtime.

Step 5: Wait for confirmation

After the request is submitted, Aloware works with your current carrier to process the port. Once the port completion date is confirmed, Aloware will notify you. If your request involves multiple numbers, some numbers may be ported on different dates. You’ll be updated on any partial completions to ensure you’re aware of the progress.

Once a port date has been scheduled for your request, we will no longer be able to cancel or reschedule the port date. Please ensure that all preparations are finalized before confirming the port request.

Step 6: Verify and test

Porting is typically finalized between 8:00 to 10:00 AM PST on the scheduled completion date. Once the transfer is complete, Aloware will ensure the numbers are properly routed in the system.

When the process is finalized, confirm that all your ported numbers appear in your Aloware account and verify their status. Aloware Support will also test the numbers for both voice and SMS functionality to ensure everything is working as expected. Once verified, you’re ready to start using Aloware’s platform for all communication needs.

Notes on number porting

There are no fees for porting unless your current provider specifies otherwise. While toll-free numbers don’t require a PIN, an LOA and proof of ownership are still mandatory for their transfer.

By preparing the required documents and coordinating with Aloware, you’ll ensure a smooth and efficient transition. If you have additional questions or require assistance, Aloware’s Support Team and Customer Success Managers are always available to help.
