Sequence Step: Enroll and disenroll contacts in AloAi Agents

What these steps actually do

AloAi sequence steps automate when AI agents start and stop talking to your contacts. Instead of manually tracking which contacts should receive AI interactions, your sequences handle this based on rules you set up.

The two steps work together to manage the complete AI interaction lifecycle:

  1. Start AloAi Conversation - automatically starts a conversation between an AloAi agent and a contact at any point you choose in your sequence. Typically used to engage new or reactivated leads.

  2. Disenroll from AloAi Agents - Removes a contact from assigned agents automatically, so they stop receiving AI messages. Useful when a contact is no longer qualified, requests to stop, or moves to a human agent.

When you should use these steps

Contact qualification scenarios

If you receive leads from different places (forms, imports, referrals) and can't reply one-by-one, set up a sequence to have AI agents ask qualifying questions and tag the responses.

Re-engagement campaigns

For contacts who haven't responded in a while, use a sequence to start a new AI conversation intended to re-engage them. If they respond, move them to active nurturing; if not, stop outreach.

Handoff management

When a real staff member takes over, or a lead is no longer relevant, use "Disenroll" to stop AI messages automatically and avoid duplicate follow-up.

Setting up your AloAi sequence

  1. Prerequisites check

Before configuring sequences, verify that your AI agents can actually initiate conversations. Check that outbound AI agents have opener messages configured—without these, the sequence step will fail to execute.

Test your AI agents manually to ensure they work as expected. If an AI agent doesn't function properly in manual testing, it won't work in sequences either.

For details on creating AloAi Agents, see the step-by-step instructions in the Comprehensive guide to AloAi Agents.

  2. Create the sequence structure

Start with a simple sequence focused on one specific use case. Don't try to handle multiple scenarios in your first implementation. Choose either lead qualification or re-engagement as your initial focus. To learn to set up the initial sequence settings, read this guide.

  3. Add the AloAi conversation step

Navigate to your sequence steps and add "Start AloAi Conversation." Select the appropriate AI agent based on your sequence's purpose. If you're qualifying leads, choose an agent configured with qualifying questions. For re-engagement, select an agent with reactivation messaging.

Configure delays based on what happens before this step. If the AI conversation is the first step after a form submission, no delay capitalizes on immediate interest. If it follows other communications, add delays to prevent overwhelming contacts.

Testing and validation process

Manual testing protocol

Before activating your sequence for real contacts, test it thoroughly with internal team members or a small group of willing contacts. Manual enrollment allows you to observe the complete sequence execution and identify problems.

Enroll yourself or a colleague in the sequence and monitor what happens. Check that the AI agent starts conversations at the expected time with appropriate messaging. Verify that any subsequent sequence steps execute correctly. For instructions on how to manually enroll a contact to AloAi agent, refer to this guide.

Monitor contact history

During testing, closely review contact history to understand the sequence's impact. You should see clear records of sequence enrollment, AI agent activation, and step completion. This visibility helps you identify timing issues or configuration problems.

Look for gaps between sequence steps or unexpected delays. These often indicate configuration issues that need resolution before broader deployment.

Implementing "Disenroll from AloAi Agents"

Use this to stop AI agents from contacting a lead when their situation changes—such as when they convert, opt out, or need to be routed to a human.

Configure disenrollment steps

Add "Disenroll from AloAi Agents" steps at appropriate points in your sequence. These typically appear after trigger events that indicate a contact should stop receiving AI communications.

Set timing carefully—remove contacts before they receive conflicting messages, but not so quickly that valuable AI interactions are interrupted. Consider the typical duration of effective AI conversations in your context.

Integration with other tools

  1. HubSpot workflows - Integrate to automatically enroll leads into Aloware sequences when a form is submitted or CRM action occurs.

  2. Tags & Dispositions - Use AI conversations to tag or score leads and remove them from agents when disqualified

  3. SMS, MMS, and Call Steps - Build hybrid workflows combining AloAi Agent interactions with text messages or calls

What important configuration does this take?

  1. Agent type - choose between Voice/Text and Inbound/Outbound agents.

  2. Sequence timing settings

    Configure:

    • Operation times (days/hours)

    • National holiday logic

    • Delay between steps

  3. Contact removal rules - define when contacts should exit the sequence (e.g., reply, opt-out).
